The SEO Benefits When You Buy a Premium Domain

Premium domain name SEO benefits come in many forms, from backlink potential to type-in traffic – as domain specialist Joe Uddeme explains in this blog post.

Introduction: buy a great name and get found online?

One of the questions we are most frequently asked here at nameexperts.com is, “What kind of SEO benefits will I gain if I shell out a little more and buy a premium domain name?”

Quick explainer before we go any further: premium domain names are typically those with a price tag in excess of five figures. They are also memorable and catchy – and usually have commercial use.

Back to the script: as we have a long list of things to tell potential clients about the SEO benefits of a great premium domain name, this post was long overdue.

We’ll discuss everything here, from domain authority to backlink profiles and more – so you can work out whether or not paying extra for a premium domain name will be worth it from an SEO point of view.

Hint: it usually is.

Key takeaways

  • Premium domain names can help with search visibility and build trust
  • Premium domains and the SEO backlink hack
  • Buying a great domain name can help reduce marketing costs and customer cost per acquisition
  • How the rebranding of daPulse to Monday.com helped with SEO

How premium domains help with direct search visibility and click-through rates

Once upon a time, if you sold kitchen knives and secured kitchenknives.com as your domain name, Google would likely have ranked you well when people searched for kitchen knives.

By comparison, japaneseglobalsupplies.com would have had to work harder to rank for the same search term.

This is not quite true today, as a direct match in a URL is no longer an important ranking factor. Google downgraded it after spammers bought descriptive domain names and filled them with weak content.

However, that does not paint the full picture. When you have a direct match in your URL, your site can receive higher click-through rates (CTRs).

That’s because if somebody is looking for kitchen knives, then kitchenknives.com is instantly going to catch their eye. It’s one of the reasons people buy keyword-rich domains (also known as exact-match domains). And it also explains why we currently have some good direct match domain names for sale in our listings.

Remember: if you’re joining words together (‘kitchen’ + ‘knives’ for example), domains under 15 characters tend to see the highest CTRs. So you have quite a bit of wiggle room.

Domain name brand authority and trust signals

A great domain name speaks 1,000 words. Look at it from your customers’ point of view – if you were lucky enough to secure kitchenknives.com for your knife emporium, this immediately says to your visitor that you are a serious player in your market.

Everybody subconsciously knows that premium domain names are difficult to come by (check out our post about negotiation scripts to get an idea about the process) – so it also provides a reassuring signal that you’ve probably been around for a while.

Short, direct domain names have a strong psychological element, boosting user perception of your brand and reducing any scepticism they may have about your legitimacy.

Remember, if you are purchasing a domain name that is already owned (as 99.99% of premium domains are), you can inherit its past, so to speak, also known as its domain authority.

The SEO power of domain authority

Domain authority (DA) is the score, out of 100, afforded to a site by Moz, a leading SEO software company. The higher the number, the greater the likelihood of ranking. DA is one of the cornerstones of SEO – and part of your score comes from longevity.

So, if you are buying a site first registered 25 years ago with a domain authority of 50 that has no penalty against it, your new business can get off to a very strong start.

You’re basically buying a pedigree that a new site with a virgin URL cannot match.

Strong domain authority can also help reduce bounce rates – as long as the content people see upon arrival matches their intent and expectations.

Pro tip: it’s important to check the domain name’s history to make sure you are not buying something with a shady past.

Beyond SEO: blocking out your competitors

Demand for the best domain names is incredibly strong. When you secure one of the best premium domains in your niche, you are blocking out your competitors.

Let’s say you own kitchenknives.com and your best SEO efforts only enable you to rank at position number three. If the two URLs above yours are more generic, there is a very good chance that people searching for kitchen knives on Google will click on you first.

This is priceless. Your domain name alone is doing all the heavy lifting, enabling you to outperform your SEO capacity and trump your competition.

This turns your premium domain name into a highly strategic asset. The competitive advantage of your name alone ensures you are able to punch above your weight.

All of which emphasises the need to pick a great domain name from the start. When launching your business, choosing a domain name is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make.

Getting it wrong and having to start again will usually have a negative impact on your SEO, even with strategic redirects. It’s also a hassle you can ill afford.

Our 7-point checklist before buying a premium domain for SEO

  1. Perform a thorough technical health check before making an offer.
  2. Check the domain’s history.
  3. Investigate the backlink profile/quality – those 5,000 links might all be to spammy sites. A backlink audit is essential.
  4. See how the existing site performed in search and what it sits next to (you may have missed hidden connotations).
  5. If you’re buying a domain as a going concern, check the quality of traffic (bounce rates, dwell time, conversions, etc.).
  6. Check technical SEO (site speed, mobile-friendly, crawlability, etc.).
  7. Assess for availability of country-specific TLDs. If you buy kitchenknives.com and want to launch in the UK, you may wish to know if kitchenknives.co.uk is within your budget, too.

Remember also that success in SEO comes from quality content and demonstrating to Google that you hit the mark when it comes to E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authority and Trust).

Summing up: domain name SEO benefits and how to leverage them

Just going off script for a moment, here’s a little story about how we helped the business you know as Monday.com to secure that domain name and rebrand.

The business had previously been known as daPulse, but there was concern that this wouldn’t enable them to grow.

Name Experts, working on their behalf, negotiated and secured Monday.com – because it ticked many boxes for what their brand could be.

It was:

  • Broad/generic enough to work as a brand name without desperately trying to explain what the company does.
  • Reassuringly premium – it instantly suggested a serious, credible brand.
  • Loosely connected to the world of work, which typically starts on a Monday.
  • Very memorable.

From an SEO perspective, the name change was a positive on multiple levels. Not only was it easier to recall than daPulse, its premium feel made it more attractive as a backlink candidate for websites worldwide.

Today, Monday.com has more than 1.5 million backlinks from many high authority sites, including Adobe, Zendesk, inc.com and Sage.

Monday’s marketing team are experts in leveraging the brand and have grown the company exponentially since the relaunch. They are constantly finding new ways to extract the maximum SEO value from their powerful brand name.

By following the steps outlined in this post, you may be able to do the same for your business. If you have chosen well and have a premium brand-name that is memorable, the possibilities for leveraging SEO are limitless.

Domain name taken? All is not lost.

The unfortunate truth is that the domain name you are looking for has almost certainly already been taken.

But that doesn’t mean it is not available.

A premium domain name broker such as Name Experts specialises in tracking down owners of domain names, even when they are unlisted, and making a calculated approach to register your interest.

Negotiation is a key part of the process. First-timers can easily make a hash of it.

That’s why domain name investors and start-ups worldwide lean on a seasoned domain broker with years of experience to help them secure the name they need and get their SEO journey off to a flying start.

Let us know how we can help.

What Is A Domain Name and Why Do I Need One?

Domain names are one of the foundations of every global brand – they’re your calling card online. In this post, domain name expert Joe Uddeme explains how they work and how to secure the right one for your business.   You probably know more domain names than phone numbers these days. Think of all the news sites you know the address of – plus Amazon, Apple and all those big brands whose website URLs you can guess because nine times out of ten, it is their brand name + .com. While the world of domain names is easy and familiar at face value, behind the scenes, there’s a lot more going on. If you’re getting ready to buy a premium domain name – one costing in the thousands that will be memorable and potentially valuable for a business in the long term – you need to have a solid grasp of what you’re getting into. To stop you from confusing domain names with websites or even website hosting services, this post is a great place to start. Key Takeaways What is a domain name How does a domain name work How to choose the right name for your business Securing a name that will keep your business on track   What Is A Domain Name? To put it simply, a domain name is the address of your website. It is the phrase or word that you will type into your URL bar of your browser to find your website. For example, our website is https://nameexperts.com/ You can purchase domain names through a domain registrar, through a hosting provider, or let a domain name broker help you. What is the DNS? You can’t really answer the question, “What is a domain name?” without addressing DNS. Domain names are part of a large network called the Domain Name System (DNS) and it is managed by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). The ICANN is a non-profit organization responsible for management and maintenance of the DNS, as well as regulating domain registrars. How Does the DNS Work? When you type a domain name into your browser, your computer will check if you’ve previously looked at that domain. If not, then your browser will contact the local DNS server to pull it up. Your local DNS server breaks down the domain name into sections. We’ll use our name again as an example. There are three parts to nameexperts.com – www., nameexperts, and .com. The .com is known as a top level domain (TLD) and the local DNS server will search for this section first, and then serves to find all the details of your domain name and send that information back to the browser you’re using. There are obviously a lot more technical steps to it, but that’s the basics of how the DNS works. Let’s talk more about what you really need to know – what types of domain name extensions are available.   Different Types of Domain Name Extensions All domain names are made up of a website name (nameexperts), and a top level domain (.com). Though the extensions can vary, we think it is useful to know the differences between the types of top-level domains available so that when it’s time to choose your domain name, you choose the right one. The two types we are going to talk about today are Generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs) and Sponsored Top-Level Domains (sTLDs). Generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs) Normally, the best course of action is to choose a reputable TLD like .com, .net, or .org. But because these are so popular, there are millions of domain names that have been registered to date. So the name you want might be taken (read our post: “How to buy a domain owned by someone else”) – or it may be hard to find a name that works. Here are some of the most generic TLDs: .com (commercial) .info (information) .org (organizational) .net (network) .biz (business) Sponsored Top-Level Domains (rTLDs) In addition to gTLDs, there are also some top level domains that are sponsored by organizations or agencies for very specific and often exclusive use. Here are some examples you’ll recognize: .gov (used by the US government) .edu (used by educational institutions) .int (used by international organizations) .mil (limited to US military entities only) Subdomains We thought we should also mention subdomains. A subdomain is also known as a third level domain and is an extra part of a domain name. They are viewed as separate websites by the search engines, so creating subdomains can help improve your site’s SEO. Specifically, a good time to use a subdomain is for a blog. It might look like https://blog.nameexperts.com.   How To Choose The Right Domain Name Now that we’ve answered what is a domain name, we want to help you choose a strong domain name that accurately reflects your business. Ideally, you want to be easy for your target market to remember and be something that is timeless. Your domain name broker can help you find the perfect domain name and get you started with the process that goes along with it. Begin by doing some research on keywords that are relevant for your business. Whether it’s the name of your business or another keyword that relates to your business and you want to rank for it, this type of domain name will help improve your site’s SEO (search engine optimization). Another tip is to keep your domain short and memorable. You want it to stand out but be easy to remember – try to keep it to three words or less. You also want to make sure you avoid numbers and hyphens. People won’t remember where they go and they might mistype. Which leads us into another tip for choosing your domain name, make sure it is easy to spell. Shy away from words with multiple spelling variations or one that might be difficult to pronounce. Think long term. You want a domain name that supports the growth of your business and will last for years to come. Changing your domain name later can really hurt your business.   Working With A Domain Name Broker – The Easy Solution Getting your domain name right is crucial for your business or organization. It can help define your brand and form a lasting impression on your audience. Do your research, and then if you’re serious about securing a seemingly unavailable name, reach out to a domain broker. We can help you buy and register a name – even if it belongs to someone else. We can also advise on strong alternative names for your business. Sedo Sedo is a dedicated domain marketplace (similar to GoDaddy) with millions of users. It has been around for over two decades, making it a trusted marketplace for buying and selling domains. Any domain name owner can sign up for free and list their domain for sale on the website, and prospective buyers can easily contact them through the platform to buy domains. On Sedo, sellers can set a fixed price for their domain, put it up for auction, or indicate that they’re entertaining offers with an unspecified price range. When buyers come to the site, they can search for any keyword and check if anyone has listed a related domain name on the market. Sedo Search Sample: The first three results are bikes.org, bikes.co, and bikes.biz, which are premium domain names. Sedo also includes other domain names that are closely related to your search phrase to sell domains. The first two domains in this example have a Make Offer buttons next to them, while the last has a Buy It Now button for your popular domain. This indicates that the domain sellers of the first two domains put them up for auction, while the third domain’s owner set a fixed price for their marketing strategy. As a buyer, you’re free to search for any specific URL and find related domains listed on Sedo to find the perfect domain. Purchasing from the domain marketplace requires added registration and jumping through a few other hoops, but it’s worth it, as Sedo has such a large selection of premium domains available for acquisition. Search for domains on Sedo: Sedo Domain Marketplace 3. NamePros NamePros is an online community for domain name owners to interact and discuss events related to their industry. In the forum’s early days, users commonly posted they had domain names available for sale and wanted to connect with potential buyers. Observing this, the owner of the forum launched an official domain marketplace section for buying and selling domain names. On NamePros, any registered user can list the domain names they have available in a forum post. To make the domains easy for prospective buyers to find, NamePros has formal categories that users can attach to their posts to find the perfect domain. How much is it worth? Namepros can also share pertinent details of recently sold domains that are similar in nature to your domain search. Because it is a forum, NamePros only helps buyers and owners find each other, and it’s up to them to negotiate and decide how they’ll handle payments for the domain. This is unlike Sedo, which facilitates payments and domain transfers for its users, among other services. When using NamePros to buy a domain you should be more careful about your purchase. Set specific terms with the seller before proceeding on any deal, and use a trusted online escrow service (e.g. Escrow.com) to ensure that the payment goes through only after the seller has transferred the domain name to your preferred registrar. You can find a large variety of domain names for sale on NamePros, making it one of the best domain marketplaces in the World. Search for domains on NamePros: NamePros Domain Marketplace

How We Helped Air Filtration Specialists Second Nature to Rebrand With a Premium Domain Name

When a business is stuck with a legacy name that no longer works, rebranding is often the only solution. But securing the domain name that goes with your new moniker is rarely easy – unless you have a premium domain name broker on your side.   You may have heard of Second Nature, an air filtration subscription business based in Raleigh, North Carolina. Second Nature sells high-quality home air filters on a subscription basis, letting people access clean air conveniently. However, the company didn’t start with its current name. It was previously known as FilterEasy before rebranding in 2019. Rebranding from FilterEasy to Second Nature reflected the company’s decision to become an all-encompassing “home wellness” brand instead of limiting itself just to filters. It was a sound decision that made the company more attractive to customers and investors. FilterEasy was a referral from one of our trusted partners to help identify the owner and secure the SecondNature.com domain name. They were budget-conscious and looked for a way to buy the domain name without investing all the capital on day one. They were looking for a domain broker or consultant that could help assign value to the asset, and also protect the anonymity of the FilterEasy team. Second Nature is an ideal case study of how proper rebranding can boost a company’s fortunes. It’s something you can draw a lot of lessons from.   Starting out – new insight about air filters FilterEasy began in 2012 as the brainchild of two students from the North Carolina State University (NCSU). Kevin Barry and Thad Tarkington sought to help people access residential air filters conveniently. Their idea was to sell home air filters on a recurring subscription basis so that customers could change them regularly. Often, homeowners buy air filters and forget to change them at the recommended time. An unchanged air filter usually clogs up, and debris passes through, causing adverse effects. Hence, subscriptions represented an excellent reminder for customers to change their filters. FilterEasy passed through a local startup accelerator program and launched out of beta in 2014. It began by offering air filters in over three dozen sizes. Barely a year after its launch, it had amassed 10,000+ subscribers and grossed $1 million in annual recurring revenue, representing major success.
